KAPPA ALPHA THETA

Founded on January 27, 1870, Kappa Alpha Theta became the first Greek-letter women's fraternity. It also became the first international fraternity when they expanded a few years later to Canada in 1877. There are now well over 270,000 members in this organization!

Four female students of Indiana Asbury (now DePauw University) founded Kappa Alpha Theta over 148 years ago! The university only began to admit women three years just before this organization was formed. Bettie Locke, one of the founding members, actually build Kappa Alpha Theta from ideas from two fraternities Locke had very close connections with; Beta Theta Pi (her father's fraternity), and Phi Gamma Delta "FIJI" (her brother's fraternity).

The Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation works to aid scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate members yearly. In total the sisters raise more than $1.1 million annually! Their international philanthropy, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), is an organization that helps neglected and abused children in the court. The purpose is to make sure that every legal action is made with the best interest in mind for these children.

Make sure to plan ahead and get your JennaBenna Kappa Alpha Theta Founder’s Day sorority shirt before January 27 so that you can join in the celebration of the fraternity's winter founding.
